Being in the Present Moment

This is a great article about being present from Synchronicity. Read it and think!

Being present

Where are you in this moment? Not geographically, but in terms of the past, present and future. Amazingly, we spend very little time actually being "here and now" in the present.

In terms of polarities, the past and future represent the negative polarity, simply because neither is real. The past is only a memory, while the future is mere speculation. However, the present is the positive polarity as it presents the truthful experience we are having moment to moment. In the Synchronicity Holistic Model of Reality, the negative polarity is equated with illusion while the positive is equated with truth. Since the negative polarity is dominant for the vast majority of humanity, it's not surprising that the past and present are the primary focus for most people.

Reflect upon what it is like when you are dwelling on the past or projecting yourself into the future. The mind is usually hard at work recalling past memories or fantasizing about possible future scenarios that may or may not happen. Compare this to being present here and now. The mind is still functioning - but it no longer has center stage. There is something else going on.... a stillness.... a depth of experience.... a sense of presence (perhaps that's why it's called the present!).

The present moment is where the cutting edge experience of your life is happening. There is richness to the moment because it is where your body is breathing, your emotions are being felt, your heart is beating and subtle-dimensional experience can be accessed. You can only be truly aware of yourself as a whole person in this moment.

A very interesting exercise is to check in with yourself periodically during the day and see where you are in terms of moment to moment presence. To help, you may even wish to set a reminder to bring yourself to the here and now. An alarm set to ring on the hour every hour, can be a good prompt to deliver you back into present moment focus.

There are also many simple techniques to promote being present during your meditative practice. For example, when using a Synchronicity Contemporary Meditation soundtrack, just continually draw your attention to the sound of the music whenever you realize you are off on thoughts of the past or future. Focusing on the breath or any part of your body is another powerful tool for anchoring you in the present moment.

For this week, bring yourself back to the present as often as you can. The more you do, the more you will be emphasizing the positive and increasing balance. The present is where your blissful holistic nature awaits you.
