Conscious Breathing - Part 2

Last week, we discussed breathing as a focal point for creating balance in human experience. We also delineated a simple sitting technique designed to demonstrate the impact of conscious breathing. Today, we will expand upon last week’s experience and bring it into a more active context.

This is a walking meditation that utilizes a focus on breathing as a means of maintaining awareness along with physical activity. It is recommended that you choose an outdoor location where there is fresh air and natural surroundings, although your own neighborhood will serve very well even if it does not fit that description. The technique involves walking briskly with a focus on your breath as follows:

Beginning with your breath at equilibrium, begin walking and timing your in-breath to the count of seven along with seven walking steps. You can actually count one, two, three.....as you take one, two, three steps, etc. When you have reached seven, ideally your breath is fully in and then you begin to count down, seven, six, five....etc., as you slowly release the breath, also in time with your steps. You will walk like this, with a continuous focus on your breathing in relation to your walking steps for at least 7 - 10 minutes. You may go longer if you wish.

When you are complete with this walking meditation, come to a place where you can sit and make some written notes on your experience. How do you feel now in your "state of being"? Are you tired or energized? Are you emotionally contented and uplifted or down? Is your mind more clear and sharp or are you experiencing dullness or fatigue?

If you feel this experience was a beneficial one for you, you may incorporate it into your daily life. It will assist you in creating your life more consciously.

Conscious Breathing

I wanted to continue on my previous post on breathing and continue with an article from Synchronicity. If you are interested in their products check them out here -

Conciouse Breathing
Breathing is perhaps the most intimate connection we have with our environment. Every moment, for as long as we continue to live, we are breathing. Yet, we remain largely unaware of this fundamental process and for the most part, our breathing reflects the imbalanced condition of our body, emotions and mind. However, the classical traditions of meditative experience were acutely aware of the fundamental role of "conscious breathing" in restoring and increasing balance in human experience. Here is a simple and effortless way to breathe with awareness and create a significant shift in your sense of well-being:

We will begin with the stationary version of this exercise and next week, we will move onto the moving version. Start by sitting comfortably in a chair or on a bed or floor cushion. If you are sitting in a chair, it is helpful if you can sit on the edge of your seat and leave your back unsupported. If not possible, it is fine to use a pillow and lean back.

Begin with your breath at equilibrium, neither all the way out nor fully in. Your eyes may closed or remain open. Now, breath in slowly, while you mentally count from one to seven. While breathing and counting, remain as aware as possible of the flow of your breath as it fills your lungs and chest. When you reach seven, ideally you have timed your breathing to reach the point of maximum in-breath. Then, exhale while once again counting slowly from seven back again to one, maintaining awareness of the flow of your breath outward. Continue this process for about five minutes. Before you get up and go, take a moment to notice how you are feeling...your "state of being". Are you experiencing more balance than before the exercise? You may do this process anytime you have a break....
Next week, we will explore conscious breathing along with movement to add an extraordinary new dimension to our "ordinary" life.

60 seconds to a calm mind

We all take breathing for granted and probably don't give it a second thought. This is fine, but when you feel stressed if you take a moment and focus on your breathing and follow the instructions below you will be able to induce a calm mind in no time.

Here is a quick exercise that will release stress and calm your mind is about 60 seconds. It's a Yogic breathing method called "Alternate Nose Breathing".

It is simple and here is how you do it:
  1. Sit comfortably and take a few slow, deep breaths.
  2. Take your right hand and tuck your index and ring finger into your palm.
  3. Then use your thumb and close the right nostril.
  4. Inhale through your left nostril to a count of about eight. While doing this focus on the life giving breath entering your body.
  5. Close your left nostril with your ring finger, release your thumb, then breath out your right nostril to a count of eight. While doing this visualize the energy circulating throughout your body.
  6. Keeping your left nostril closed, breath in your right nostril to a count of eight.
  7. Go back to step three and repeat.
This exercise is also a great way to begin a meditation or a self hypnosis session. It puts you in a perfect state for growth and will balance the right and left hemishperes of your brain.

I also perform this technique, when I feel groggy and need a clear mind.

Biofeedback game enhances meditation?

What an amazing time we live in today. The life changing tools available to us are astonishing. Now there is a software "game" that will literally change the way you think about meditation. That game is Journey to Wild Divine.

Installation
The installation was simple and there were no problems. You install the software, plug the biofeedback device (light stone) into an available USB port and you're done. Lastly you register the software and then you are ready to begin your "Inner-Adventure".

The Game
When you start the game you will be awestuck as you are lead through a beautiful introduction where Sophia, one of your mentors, explains what your journey will entail. The graphics are breathtaking. I was amazed at the creativity and attention to detail in the world that I was immersed in. I lowered the lights in the room and was transported to a mythical fantasy world. Yes, very cool.

Throughout your journey you are instructed to manipulate your surroundings using breath, relaxation and meditation techniques. You don't realize it, but you are absorbing teachings that will enable you to control your body-mind connection and manipulate your energy.

There are over 40 different "events" or challenges to complete as you explore this stunning world. You will travel through a mythical world complete with sacred temples, magnificent palaces, and enhanting landscapes. All the while, beautiful, peaceful music surrounds you further enhancing the relaxing effect you will experience.

What kind of "events" will I complete?
Here are a few:

  • To enter into the garden, you must get a pinwheel to spin. You are instructed to breath deep, again...WOW it's spinning!

  • While in the garden your meditation mentor instructs you in the art of levitation. Your goal is to levitate a sphere. All the while, you are gently instructed and encouraged. Slowly the ball will rise.

  • Can you control the billows used to fan a fire in a fireplace? In a peaceful cottage you learn to control your environment by controlling your energy.

The many mentors you encounter on your journey will teach you techniques like the "Heart Breath". These techniques allow you to increase, decrease or synchronize your body rhythms and in turn master the "events" encountered. The new knowledge you acquire will enhance your well-being and growth forever.

An interesting story
As I was deep into the journey, my 5 year old startled me and insisted that I let him "play". How could I say no! He was completely taken by it. He spent over 40 minutes exploring and learning. Can you imagine if you started to learn to meditate and control your mind/body connection at that age? This is not only effortless learning, but fun learning. All ages will be delighted with Journey to Wild Divine.

I can't say enough about this game and I call it a game lightly. It is a wonderful self growth tool hidden in a game.

If you have always wanted to learn to meditate but have found it difficult to quiet your mind, this is the key you have been looking for. If you are an experienced meditator then you will have fun too! Access your inner being, learn to control your mind all while playing a game. The real benefit is that the lessons you learn during gameplay will become invaluable tools that you will use in everyday life. Watch your stress levels drop and joy fill every corner of your life. It just doesn't get any better than this.

If you have kids I urge you to look seriously at this. When you see your child engaged in an adventure that is building skills he/she will use for a lifetime, you will know you have made the right choice.

Proof that your Mind is MORE powerful than you think!

You may have already seen this, but take a minute and read the following paragraph:
Aoccdrnig to a rsceearcehr at an Elingsh Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

Could you read it? You didn't even have to try, did you?

Although I don't know the details of the study, this certainly is a great example of the power of our minds. Power we don't even know we have.

I just wanted to show you that we ALL are endowed with an amazing "computer". Just think of what you could do with your brain if you worked it out every once in a while. In the next newsletter that is just what we will do!

The possibilities are endless, never sell yourself short. You are creation full of wonder and surprises. What will you accomplish next?

Keep Your Brain in Shape

You don't have to submit to mental decline as you age. The brain is an amazing tool, but you have to use it. Let's start with a little background information about the brain.

As you know, you could write volumes on the brain and still just scratch the surface. So, this short introduction to your brain is greatly simplified, but I think it will help you realize that simply walking takes a lot of brain power.

The Brain
Your brain is made up of about 100 billion neurons. The neurons are specialized cells that transfer and process information. As we age, the number of neurons does decrease, however recent research shows that an adult brain is able to create new neurons.

But don’t worry too much about your decreasing neuron cell count, the real power lies in the connections between neurons. The connections are made through the tree-like extensions branching from each neuron. The extensions are called dendrites. A single neuron can be connected to tens of thousands of other neurons. WOW!

As you age, you may feel that you are more forgetful and that you are experiencing mental decline. This is not caused by a decrease in the number of neurons, but is actually caused by a decrease in the number and complexity of dendrites.

What can you do?
Just as physical exercise fortifies the body, mental exercise does the same for your brain and those important neuron connections.

You are now wondering, what can I do to keep these connections strong? Well, here is the answer…USE YOUR BRAIN!

Barring any physical illness, what is the biggest thing that contributes to a decline in mental power? Answer: A monotonous routine. That’s right. You need to keep trying new things, learning new skills and do your everyday activities differently. This will not only keep your brain strong and young, but I guarantee you won’t be bored.

The Exercises
The following exercises seem easy, but they do work.

  1. Switch the hand you are using to control the computer mouse.
  2. Use your opposite hand to brush your teeth, dial the phone or operate the TV remote.
  3. Change your Routines:
  • Use a different route to go to work.
  • Read a different type of book. If you like romance novels, try a mystery.
  • Take up a new hobby.
  • Listen to a new Meditation CD from HealingProducts.com

The human brain is impressive in that it continually adapts to new situations. By breaking your routines you are forcing your brain to make NEW connections and strengthen those that already exist.

A couple of quotes to keep you thinking!

He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice.
Albert Einstein

I like nonsense; it wakes up the brain cells.
Dr. Seuss
